Pedagogical Framework: Competence development through storytelling: a draft conceptual framework

In the Sinbad project we seek to promote competence development among young children in the pre-school and early school years age of 3- 7 years old through story telling. Throughout the last decades the focus in education have grown towards a stronger achievement orientation. As a consequence discussions arise on lowering the entry age of compulsory school education. Education Pack: Further training handbook for people working in early childhood education – Storytelling for the competence development of children

This handbook is the result of research and development undertaken by all partners, with the express aim of creating a resource for teachers and other educators working with primary-aged children. We set out to create a useful collection of information, guides, techniques, methodologies and suggestions to help teachers bring story-telling into the classroom, as an educational tool. The result is this Education Pack, or toolbox, which we hope will assist you.

Navigating with Sinbad

You might want to organize informal storytelling practice sessions with colleagues, either in your own Kindergarten or school or with a group of interested peers in your (teacher) environment. The SINBAD team has developed an e-course which you can either follow yourself first and/or share with your colleagues and then go to practice together. The guidelines you are reading here are first steps to help you on your way.

An ‘Evolutionary’ Case for Storytelling (Storybag)

As a partner with a background in socio-ethology of behaviour and communication and with a growing interest and knowledge as to the applicability of storytelling and narrative approaches to different areas of education it seemed logical that our contribution would be more in these fields. We are consultants, not practising teachers. However, we are also parents who care for the education of the following generations and the quality of education.

Find a story

The Sinbad partnership has compiled a collection of stories with different competence development activities which you can perform with children. Please have in mind that the stories just give examples of what is possible. You may follow the example but also use them as inspiration for your own ideas.
